Critical Review of Polymeric Building Envelope Materials: Degradation, Durability and Service Life Prediction

This paper provides a critical review of the degradation, durability and service life prediction (SLP) polymeric building envelope materials (BEMs), namely, claddings, air/vapour barriers, insulations, sealants, gaskets fenestration. The rate material deterioration properties determine usefulness product; therefore, knowledge significant degradation mechanisms in play for BEMs is key to design proper SLP methods. seeks estimate expectancy material/component exposed in-service conditions. topic especially important with respect potential impacts climate change. surrounding environment dictates play, as change progresses, aging conditions become more unpredictable. can result unexpected changes and/or damages BEMs, shorter than expected SL. development comprehensive methods economically environmentally sound, it will provide confidence, comfort safety all users. goal this existing literature order identify gaps suggestions address these light rapidly evolving climate.
